BiCOM Inc. And Community Health Action Help To Prevent Blindness In Our Communities

In a Joint effort to raise awareness about the threat of glaucoma, BiCOM Inc. is joining forces with The Community Health Action of Staten Island. BiCOM will be helping to conduct intraocular “eye” pressure (IOP) screenings with their portable, non-invasive (through the eyelid) Tonometer Diaton and providing materials about glaucoma prevention to the public. The company greatly supports community outreach and awareness of Glaucoma. On World Glaucoma Day, BiCOM Inc. held a very successful screening event at The Staten Island Ferry. BiCOM Inc., cooperates with national and international for-profit and non-for-profit organizations to increase awareness and promote mass screenings with the help of Diaton Tonometer

The Community Health Action of Staten Island educates about HIV/AIDS and serves the needs of those affected by the disease. CHASI is now integrating Glaucoma screenings for the community. BiCOM has trained members of Health Action to screen using simple & non-contact Tonometer Diaton. CHASI developed health, educational and social programs for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender communities in the borough. They also provide a food bank for the community and an outpatient program for those affected by drug or alcohol abuse. The Community Health Action Of Staten Island has a long history of helping those most in need and the BiCOM team is proud to join the efforts.

Prior to joining BiCOM, Heather Joy Roth was an active member of Community Health Action and due to her efforts, both organizations have currently joined forces in the fight against Glaucoma . At a recent interview, Miss. Roth commented " Outreach programs should be aware of the threat of preventable blindness and other non-for-profit organizations should use Diaton Tonometer for mass screenings."

Known as "the sneak thief of sight," glaucoma is a disease characterized by gradual loss of vision due to optic nerve damage. Many people do not notice the start of Glaucoma because peripheral vision is first to be lost. As the optic nerve becomes increasingly damaged, permanent vision loss and blindness can occur. 60 million Americans are at risk for developing glaucoma. The goal is to identify patients with increased intraocular pressure before any nerve damage has occurred so no vision loss ever develops. To protect your vision, have your eyes examined on a regular basis.
